Practical Prevention of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease caused by gradual wear and tear of joints. Though the exact cause of osteoarthritis is not determined but many factors may contribute to the development of this disease. They include age, sex, hereditary, nerve injury, muscle weakness, obesity or occupation. But there is something which you can do to diminish your risk of getting osteoarthritis.

Practical Prevention of Osteoarthritis:

Keep your weight down: Research suggests that obese people are at risk of osteoarthritis and that weight loss prevents or delays osteoarthritis from occurring. Obese people posses a significant risk of developing osteoarthritis by putting unnecessary strain on the joints. Study shows that people who loose 11 pounds cut their risk of osteoarthritis to half.

Get enough calcium and vitamins C and D: One of the best ways to avoid bone osteoarthritis is the proper intake of vitamins especially calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is the major component of bone, and is therefore crucial to maintain bone density whereas vitamin D helps in absorption of calcium.

Intake of sufficient amount of calcium in diet: Adult should have a daily intake of 1,000-1,500 mg per day through diet and this will reduce the chances of getting osteoarthritis.

Take precautions at work: Researchers have linked osteoarthritis with repetitive tasks and with jobs that involve kneeling or squatting, especially when lifting heavy objects.

Strengthen muscle and joints through exercise: Exercise can help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Light to moderate-intensity physical activity may prevent or delay the process of bone degeneration.

Avoids sports injury: Avoid sport injury by taking proper precaution while playing or doing exercise. Precautions that you should take while exercising include using proper equipment and protective gear; cross training or varying your activities; taking a break if something hurts or you feel tired; and getting prompt care for injuries.

Mental Capacities Affected With Age, Improved With Practice

They cause family members to be concerned about the ability of seniors to be left at home alone where they could wander off, lose track of time and location or forget important things like paying bills or personal hygiene.

According to findings of a recent study conducted by a psychologist at the University of Virginia, mental abilities decrease with age. Crystallized intelligence and vocabulary usage decline over time. Also notable in the study was the concept that seniors’ recognition levels are higher with practice and repetition. Another study, one conducted by scientists at the University of California in San Francisco, found that seniors who participated in brain training activities with computer games were able to improve their short-term cognitive abilities.

In direct correlation with these scientific studies, it is often believed that seniors should engage in regular mental fitness exercises. This helps them to stay mentally active, be more independent and live a safer lifestyle. While these activities go above and beyond the traditional services provided by senior home health care services, they are available. Certain at-home health care companies provide non medical care for their clients that helps them to improve their mental capacities. They participate in activities such as playing cards and board games, reading books and magazines and attending plays, lecture series and musical concerts.

Those suffering from the effects of Alzheimer’s, dementia and other mentally debilitating chronic conditions need extra supervision to ensure their safety and quality of life. Healthcare providers should have additional training to help them handle the special situations that arise with these patients. This advanced interaction focuses on enriching life by focusing on the spirit, mind, body and family of the individual. Those with specialized at-home senior care are less likely to be in danger and more likely to stay engaged in social and mental activities.

Some of the symptoms of senile dementia and Alzheimer’s disease include loss of attention span, loss of vision or hearing, confusion as to where and when they are, and difficulty in identifying people and things that should be familiar. Some seniors may exhibit inappropriate behavior or poor judgment that is unusual for them. Others may become easily agitated or emotional charged. Difficulty with short-term memory and math problems are also common.

Healthy Heart Wisdom

Finally, the heart health experts agree with grandma’s adage. Her wisdom no longer goes against the medical code. Well known for her common sense wisdom, grandma would often say that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Anyone who has experienced an avoidable life altering event such as hospitalization due to a drinking binge, a severed toe from a whizzing lawn mower blade or a car crash while reading a text message will quickly tell you that “grandma” was right.

After much observation, investigation, and thousands of case studies the researchers believe that grandma’s philosophy holds the key to many of our current health care woes. They have proven that it is easier to prevent certain diseases than it is to cure them. Prevention has also proven to be the most effective way to reduce rising health care costs. It has become the preferred option for clinicians and patients alike. The new paradigm of preventative medicine has virtually replaced the old paradigm of disease state medicine as a first choice approach. The older approach focused primarily on the disease state, its management, and treatment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now claim that more than 75% of our diseases are preventable or reversible. Although many of us are seeking ways to take charge of our health profiles and improve our health status, the majority still fail miserably when it comes to reducing our risk for certain cancers, heart disease, and diabetes. In our quest for a preventative lifestyle change we often find ourselves imprisoned by the shackles of habit and ignorance.

In the Ancient text, Proverbs tells us that desire without knowledge is not good. Behavioral science has demonstrated that inspiration without information leads to frustration, and ultimately failure. Because most of us don’t understand why, we often choose behaviors that are counter- preventative, and become victims who can only react to a health crisis.

To achieve a lasting preventative life style change requires a clear understanding of the urgency for change. This is means more than “knowing your numbers”. It means knowing what your uncontrollable and controllable risk factors for heart disease are. Ask your health care professional what your numbers are and what they mean. Then follow your health care professional’s advice.Let this insight into your health status(risks vs outcomes) become the motivation to make for change that is necessary and lasting.

Health Care

Hello all you wonderful people out there. If there is one subject that affects every one of us that is our health. What is the best way of taking care of our health?

Let’s take a brief look at some of our options for taking care of our health.

Some people believe in preventative measures for taking care of their health. What exactly does this mean? Basically, it means eating a healthy diet, exercising properly, and living a healthy lifestyle. A yearly check-up is also a good way to know what shape you are in and to catch any developing illness.

An unpleasant factor in modern life is stress. It is a fact of life. Fortunately, there are many ways to deal with stress. Conventional medicine is one method – relaxation medication. Meditation is another method. In between there are such options as daily rest (even if for ten to twenty minutes), spending part of every day in a soothing physical environment, taking a break, a change of scenery, a vacation. A good laugh, whether at a funny joke or at a comical situation is highly recommended for keeping your mind and body in good shape.

None of us is infallible. We are all prone to illness. What are our options when we do become ill? Again there is conventional medicine. Medication for practically every illness under the sun is available.

Personally, when something out of the norm is detected on my blood test, I make a bee line to the dietician’s office. By eating those foods, those vitamins, required by the body, balance can be regained.

There is more than one way of doing things. You decide what makes you feel good and how you want to stay healthy. After all, health is wealth.

Considerations to Make in Choosing a Chiropractor

Truth is, looking for a chiropractor can be somehow difficult given that a general of them are involved in some kind of unscientific practices. So in order to save your time and effort, start the process of looking for one through phone calls. Talk to the chiropractor and explore his or her attitude.

As much as possible, do not go with chiropractor whose practice is merely limited into the conservative method of the treatment. Also, you can seek the help of your personal medical doctor. Ask about names of reputed chiropractors who your personal doctor thinks to be trustworthy.

Membership to the renowned National Association for Chiropractic Medicine is a positive sign to look for. But given that the number of people who belong to this kind of organization is very small, it may be hard for you to look for them.

Go for science-based chiropractors since they can do the job of manually stretching the tight muscles and joints while at the same time using ultrasound treatment, heat or ice packs, and various other modalities that are employed by physical therapists. Also, they may ask their patience to perform home exercise program. With all of these, an improvement is expected to be seen only after a few days from the first treatment with science-based chiropractors.

These are some of the positive signs that will tell you if the chiropractor who you are asking for help is indeed reliable. You need to do your own homework to be able to rule out the best from the least.

Misuse of Medical Equipment

When doctors order tests like x-rays and CAT scans they usually only need a simple reason for doing so. Unfortunately, in many cases these types of health care equipment is misused or ordered when it is not really necessary. When this happens a patient ends up paying for a service they should not have had to. The costs alone from misuse of health care equipment is staggering. Not only is it putting a dent in the pockets of patients, but it is also part of the reason for rising health care costs.

Besides the financial side of misuse of health care equipment, there is the health concerns to consider. X-rays, for example, are known to be dangerous. A person is being subjected to radiation which can be profoundly damaging to the body. There is a limit on the recommended number of X-rays a person should receive, but many times when a doctor orders a x-ray, they are unaware of the person s history with getting x-rays. Additionally, x-rays are harmful for pregnant women and for reproductive organs, in general. Too many x-rays can lead to many health problems.

The misuse of health care equipment is something that is likely to go unnoticed. More and more insurance companies, though, are requiring further validation for such uses which may help to end misuse. However, most of the time as long as a doctor deems it necessary, the procedure will continue.

When it comes to medical equipment, x-rays are probably the most used type of health care equipment. In emergency rooms around the country, doctors usually are quick to order an x-ray if the diagnosis is not immediately recognizable. The misuse of health care equipment can lead to many problems for the patient.

Health Care For Everyone; What is the Incentive to live a Healthy Life?

If everyone gets free health care what is the incentive to live a healthy life, eat right and work out every day? Why bother? After all if there is free health care for everyone why not just wait to you have a medical problem and then go get fixed, why bother to work out? Why bother to walk around the block every day; why bother to jog?

Do you see the problem with universal health care in the United States of America paid for by the government and our tax dollars? The entire idea is flawed. Personally I don’t want to pay for people who do not take care of themselves, do not exercise, abuse alcohol and drugs and eat crappy foods.

That is not fair to me and I should not have to pay for them. They don’t care so, why should I? And why should my taxes go up so people that don’t take care about themselves can abuse yet another government social program? Now you are probably saying; yet you Republicans; always complain about taxes and you never have a solution.

Well I say to you, I do have a solution and it is a really simple one; let’s give tax incentives for people who exercise, eat right and do not do drugs or abuse alcohol. Let’s reward people for getting back in shape and in the long run we will be Bucks ahead with a whole lot less people in our population with major medical issues down the road.
